My Nan

yesterday my Nan died. She is first one in from the left.

She would have been 101 this year, and was doing so well, up until a fall a month or so back. From there on in, it was downhill. The last time I saw her was two weeks back and I knew then that that was going to be the last time I saw her.

All I can say was that she was an amazing woman, loved by everyone that met her. Her 100th party last year was a smashing event and I hope that is the way many people will remember her.

As a child, to go to 4 Lonsdale road in Norwood was always an event. I couldn't wait to get there! I didn't know anyone else that had a pantry. Her pantry was both a food store and Doctor Who's Tardis! I can smell it even now as I type.... 4 Lonsdale road was just a great place to be. I was always amazed at her tales of Dad growing up, the bomb shelters, his old Dinky cars and if I was good (which I always was and still am to this day) I was allowed to play with the Palitoy Archie Andrew Ventriloquist Puppet (now in the care of my Mum... not sure how).

Back then, mid 70's, rooms were bright, Dolly was sat there smoking, Harry doing a puzzle, Nan was busy looking after everyone. She was dynamite! Roast dinners were great, and she was the only person who could include Baked Beans into a roast dinner and make it work....

Crispy Bacon, Sardines on toast and Dundee Cake were always something she could whip up after school or get from the pantry. Of course, as I got older, I ended up staying there for a few weeks when Mum was in hospital and I really enjoyed my stay... Of course I did, she was a great Nan. As was my other Nan (Mums Mum...), but she was so far away in Bognor.

Well, fate would play a hand and due to a Mugging in the once peacefull, and now ghetto like South Norwood, Nan moved to Chelmsford so she and Her brother could be closer to Clifford... another brother. In time, Mum moved to Bognor to be closer to her Mum (who at the time was dying a slow and horrid death with Cancer). We saw Nan less, so family ge together and celebrations always took on an added air of festivity. Whether it was Christmas, her birthday or just a day we all got to gether... it was great to see Nan.

Tea was always at Tea time and the TV was hardly ever on. It was just the way it always was back then.

Once Harry had passed on, Nan finally watched a bit more TV than the usual, so our regular Sunday Morning phone calls always evolved around which TV Talent show she was engrossed in. Even failing eyesight didn't stop her from enjoying celebrity dancing on ice, Britain's got talent, X factor and Pop Idol... she loved them all.

The last time I saw her was a little hard. She was clearly in a lot of pain, and I think she was just so angry about having had a fall. But we talked. We talked about the past.... old friends, happier times... feeding the ducks at Norwood Lakes as a toddler. She may have been in pain, but she was still there, fighting the fight. I was so amazed that she remembered the ducks. So much so that I think I may have to go back one last time to feed those ducks with my own toddlers.... The walk from her house to the lake was a long one for a kid my size... probably longer for nan. Not due to her age as she was unstoppable, but probably because for the entire walk I probably didnt shut up once till we got there.... but looking at Google earth now.. its still quite a walk... Maybe I will go back there and have a look.

Goodbye Nan, you'll be so dearly missed!
